PC version is still in the pipeline for release

DICE and Electronic Arts have a new claim for fame for the Battlefield series. The release of Battlefield 1943 on Xbox Live Arcade is the fastest selling game to get to a million copies sold. The total, of course, is now over one million copies sold; and it continues to be one of the most popular games on Xbox Live Arcade despite the release of its big brother, Battlefield Bad Company 2.

The news will not make those PC users happy that have been waiting for Battlefield 1943 to finally be released for their platform. Despite the fact that Battlefield Bad Company 2 released on time for the PC and EA continues to accept pre-orders for Battlefield 1943 on the PC, no updated release date has been announced or confirmed.

According to sources, the PC version of Battlefield 1943 is still in the pipeline and developers are still working on finishing the PC version for release. After digging deeper, pretty much the same standard comments are made by our sources. The PC version of 1943 requires support and the addition of a lot of things that are not in the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 version of the game, such as a built-in server browser, mouse support, and server support, just for starters. PC users playing Battlefield Bad Company 2 on the PC know how rocky it has been since release with some of the PC specific things such as the server browser, for example. Both BFBC2 and 1943 use DICE’s Frostbite game engine technology, which has only recently made its first appearance on the PC with the release of BFBC2.

With the sales numbers that Battlefield 1943 has been able to generate on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, we would think that DICE would be anxious to get 1943 released on the PC platform where margins and profit are higher, especially after the surprising sales numbers that have been generated by the Battlefield Bad Company 2 on the PC. Our sources tell us not to look for 1943 to arrive for the PC until some of major problems are ironed out with the PC version of BFBC2, but we do think DICE is on track to deliver it before the end of the summer.
